The glass has gears
One wall display, five jobs: the fleet face it ships with, plus a parts bench, a scripted demo, on-glass diagnostics and a touch-test game — each a reboot away. Try switching gears and play the real demo storyline below; both come straight from the firmware.
Want it on real firmware? The canary.local emulator runs the display's compiled code in your browser, demo storyline included.
The gears
Each mode is a tool, not a gadget. You enter one from Settings (it asks first, then reboots); holding the glass for three seconds always brings the fleet face back.
The policy table
The safety rules, pinned by the firmware's own tests: only the fleet face takes updates; debug is the only other gear online; every other gear shows a banner and exits with a long press.
| gear | network | OTA | watchdog | long-press exit | banner |
|---|
Try the latch
Pick a gear and reboot: the display remembers it, and anything it doesn't recognize boots the fleet face.
For makers: the latch
A real ModeSim: entering a gear writes the NVS token (bench also writes the
legacy devmode bool, so a firmware downgrade still lands in the bench);
exit clears both; an unknown or uncarried token always boots the fleet face.
Play the demo storyline
The exact beats demo mode feeds the real fleet model: every severity tier, an alarm that holds long enough to demonstrate hold-to-ack, and a loop that resolves to all-quiet before it wraps. Shown at 6× wall speed.
